Calling a locksmith at 2 a.m. can feel stressful. Knowing what happens next makes it easier, and helps you spot a business that is not working in your interest.
The phone call
Expect questions about your location, the type of door or vehicle, the lock brand if you know it, and whether anyone is in danger. With that, the locksmith can give you a price and an estimated arrival window.
After-hours pricing
Some locksmiths add a charge for late-night or holiday calls; others do not. Either is fine as long as it is explained on the phone. Ask for the total, not just a service call fee.
While you wait
- Stay in a well-lit place or a neighbour's home
- Keep your phone charged and nearby
- If a child or pet is locked in a hot car, call 911 first
When the technician arrives
They should introduce themselves, confirm the price and ask for ID once the door is open. Most standard locks can be opened without damage. If drilling is needed, you should be told why and asked first.
Afterwards
Ask for an invoice. If your keys were lost or stolen, consider rekeying the next day. See our emergency locksmith page for how we handle night calls.
