Most cars built since the late 1990s will not start with a key that is only cut correctly. A small transponder chip inside the key must be recognised by the car's immobiliser. Programming pairs a new chip with your vehicle.
Types of car keys
- Basic metal keys, mostly on older vehicles
- Transponder keys with a chip in the head
- Remote head keys combining key and buttons
- Proximity or smart keys used with push-button start
How programming works
A locksmith connects a programming tool to the vehicle's diagnostic port, enters security access and adds the new key to the car's memory. Some cars allow on-board programming if you already have two working keys.
What to bring
- Vehicle registration or title
- Photo ID matching the owner
- Any working keys you still have
When the dealer is the only option
Some newer or European models use security systems that only the dealer can access. We tell you on the phone if your vehicle falls into that group.
